what is your idol?

Tonight as I sat in the business meeting which was not nice or pretty at all. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. I was ready to vomit and so were many others I know. As I sat and thought tonight about what was going on and what was being said, something that someone once told me came to mind. They said if something consumes most of your thoughts or energy in a day and you focus on it more than anything else than that is your idol. So I ask you as far as our church is concerned what is your idol is it disapproval of the pastor? the building? the money? the worship style? the people you sit next to? the nursery? the fact you have to walk across bridges to get anywhere? withholding your tithe from God because you are dissatisfied with man? What is it that has become your idol? What has become our church body's idol? If this statement is true and I agree with it, our main focus should be on the Lord and serving Him faithfully. I feverishly teach my children to OBEY and I am sure the Lord stands from heaven wishing we would listen to His voice saying obey and trust me. I am the Lord your God and you will have NO other gods before me. Watch out for who your idols have become and reign them in and surrender them to the throne of grace and ask for forgiveness.

I would sadly have to say that for a short time there my idol was having a baby. My every thought was consumed by pregnancy and infertility, but now my thoughts have shifted to worshiping God all day long. I mean that is why we are here on this Earth!!!! My thoughts now have shifted to something greater and this has helped me get through this waiting period.

Colossians 1:10-12 And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father.

I pray for the hearts of that small group in our church that is causing all of the problems. I pray that they will humbly go to the Lord and lay down their fears and worries and realize what they are doing not only to the church but also to themselves.

I agree with you. I was very disheartened in the business meeting. I know it's my duty to be at the meetings because I am a part of the church body and I need to voice my fears and what not, but I didn't really want to be there. I know that there is tension about the pastor and I know there are people withholding money, but I also have to remember something Ryan helped me to see a while back: I have to show grace. I will never understand some of the mindsets of the people that disagree with everything, but then again, they probably don't understand my mindset either. But, is this a reason to forge to show mercy and grace? Absolutely NOT! Jesus showed us mercy when we didn't deserve it. I have to remember to remind myself that I may not always agree with everyone but mercy and grace have to be available...REGARDLESS!!!

I have to admit that right now based on your definition of an idol, my idol would be getting my house organized and cleaning out. That is what I have been focusing all my free time and thought on. List after list after list of what I need to do. I'm not saying that it is bad to work hard and get things done, but at times it has robbed my joy. I have to remind my self that all this stuff is just "stuff" and that my number one focus should be on Christ and His eternal kingdom.

Now for my church idol...
My church idol lately has definitely been the issues going on in our church. It is such a distraction at times that I don't even want to go. Half our church feels one way, and half of it the opposite. Each half is at least partially misinformed. Some folks are against any change whatsoever, and some folks will violently support a cause 100% no matter the consequences. It is very sad on both accounts. Unless we change our focus solely to the Lord we will end up split right down the middle. Very very sad. Whole-hearted obedience to God should be our number one goal, for ourselves and for our church.
